Derawan Island is located at Derawan Archipelago, Berau Regency, East Kalimantan, Indonesia. The sea park beauty at the water around the island makes Derawan Island famous for its diving tourism. It has various marine biodiversity, for example cuttlefish, lobster, ghost pipefish, blue-ringed octopus, nudibranches, seahorses, ribbon eels, and scorpionfishes. At the 10 m deep coral reef, there’s a reef known as “Blue Trigger Wall” where there’re a lot of red-toothed trigger fishes at this 18 m-length reef. 28 dive spots have been identified around Derawan Island. To move from spot to spot, the divers can use boat.

The Submarine Charm of Bunaken National Sea Park

Bunaken Sea Park is one of the sea parks that have the highest marine biodiversity in the world. Because of its natural potency and the marine ecological conservation activities in this area, the local government designed the Bunaken area as a maritime and educational tourism object. Bunaken area was anounced officially by the Ministry of Forestry as national sea park in 1991.

Bunaken Sea Park is 89.065 ha wide area. It is located at North Sulawesi Province, Indonesia. This sea park consists of 5 islands and 2 coastal areas, namely Bunaken Island, Manado Tua Island, Siladen Island, Mantehage Island, Nain Island, Molas Coast - Tiwoho, and Arakan-Wawontulap Coast. Among the islands of Bunaken National Sea Park, Bunaken Island is the most popular. This ±8 km² wide island is located at the Bay of Manado. The island is part of Manado City, the capital of North Sulawesi Province.

The area of Bunaken National Park represents the tropical ecosystem of Indonesia, because it has any kind of tropical water ecosystems, such as mangrove, seagrasses, seaweeds, and reefs. There’s also tropical forest in this area. Geographically, Bunaken area includes in “Gold Triangle” water –the water connects Papua, Philippine, and Indonesia oceans–, the habitat of more than 3000 species of fish. This beautiful sea park has the diversity of rare aquatic organism species, such as dugong, dolphin, etc. There’re also Hippocampus sp., the giant clam, hawksbill turtle, green turtle, etc.

Komodo National Park

Komodo National Park is located between East Nusa Tenggara and West Nusa Tenggara Province. It consists of 3 big islands, namely Komodo Island, Rinca Island, and Padar Island, with the other 26 small/big islands. The total area is 1817 km², and the land area is 603 km². Administratively, Komodo Island includes in Komodo, West Manggarai, East Nusa Tenggara Province, Indonesia.

As reflected by its name, Komodo Island is known as the original habitat of komodo (Varanus komodoensis). Komodo National park was built up in 1980 to preserve komodo and its habitat. In 1986 this national park was received as UNESCO World Heritage Site. The natural condition is dry and barren. There is savannah, and with the limited water source and hot enough temperature, it is the suitable habitat for the ancient animal komodo.

In this national park area, the visitors can see komodo, the biggest lizard species in the world with the average body length up to 3,13 m and up to 165 kg body weight. The visitors can also watch various activities of this rare animal, such as the mating of komodo that occurs between may and august; watching when komodo eats deer, sheep, or pig; and watching when komodo basks on the street or on the tree branches at morning.
