The Millions of Trees Tourism at Bogor Botanical Garden
Bogor Botanical Garden is one of the oldest botanical gardens in Asia. It is one of special features of Bogor City that never bore people to visit, because there’re so many interesting things they can get in this place. It can attract various visitors, such as teens, families, and foreign tourists.
The botanical garden was built in 1817 by its initiator Prof. Dr. Reinwardt, a botanical professor from Germany. The location is on Jl. Ir H. Juanda, Bogor City, Indonesia. There’re centers of knowledge around this botanical garden, namely Herbarium Bogoriense, Zoology Museum, and Bogor Institute of Agriculture. This 87 ha wide area has the collection of more than 17000 species of tropical flora, including the rare orchid plants. It contains the hundreds years old-trees, no wonder the trees in this area have the big trunks and tens meters of height. The trees consist of both domestic and foreign trees. Each tree was labeled by its name and the time of its planting, so the visitors can get additional botanical knowledge during the tour.
One of the main charms of Bogor Botanical garden is ‘corpse flower’ or (Amorphophallus titanum). It’s interesting to see the moment when this rare flower blooms. This flower is unique for its unusual big size and its habit of releasing the putrid odor when blossom. This flower is the largest compound flower of flora. It can reach 2 m in height.
The visitors can choose 4 routes when entering the main gate which is guarded by 2 Ganesha statues. The first route is via Canarium Avenue, an area where a lot of the Canarium commune trees grow. There’s Lady Raffles Monument at the crossroad of big trees which are sort of narra. The glory of Istana Bogor (Presidential Palace) which is surrounded by water lily-full Kolam Gunting (a pond’s name) can be seen in this route. Across the pond, there’s the oldest tree in this botanical garden, namely lychee tree (Litchi chinenis) special from China, which was planted in 1823. In the second route, the visitors can find the leafy pandanus, palm, and some ponds with the aquatic plants. The visitors can enjoy the beautiful panorama at the Botanicus Cafe which is surrounded by grassland and big pond which was adorned by water lilies. The third route is the area of ferns, where there’s Mexico Park, a natural forest part which is full of ferns, spices, palms, and fruit bats. The fourth route is the paradise of orchid lovers. No wonder if at 1977, Siti Hartinah funded the erection of special greenhouse for wild Indonesian orchid collection.
This is a place where the visitors can see the lovely green area. Because there’re so many trees, the air in this area is fresh and oxygen-rich. The visitors can also hear the birds sing, because there’re a lot of birds here. The sound of water from the fountain ponds adds the beauty of this area. This is the lovely place to relax with family
