Bakpia, the Top Typical Food Souvenir from Yogyakarta
When visiting Yogyakarta City, it seems imperfect without bringing bakpia home. Bakpia (especially Bakpia Pathok) was wide known as the typical food souvenir of that city. It becomes one of the must souvenir icons and the top ranked Yogyakarta’s souvenirs list.
Bakpia is a kind of small round-shaped Indonesian pastries made of wheat flour dough and vegetable oil for its skin, stuffed with the filling consists of mung beans, refined sugar, and salt. Mung bean is a usual filling stuffed in original bakpia, but there’re some other fillings of bakpia such as chocolate, durian, and cheese. With its typical aroma, Bakpia is sweet and tender. They are commercially packaged in small boxes and sold at many food shops in Yogyakarta.
It’s not difficult to find bakpia in Yogyakarta. As a popular typical food, bakpia is sold at many food shops in Yogyakarta City. But the popular center of bakpia industry is Pathok, an area in the west side of Malioboro Avenue. The houses at the area along Jl. KS Tubun produce homemade bakpia. Various Bakpia Pathok are differing in the label of their package. They are labeled by the house number as the brand, for example Bakpia Pathok 25, 38, 67, 75, 99, 175, etc. From time to time, the competition among the producers becomes stricter. The producers have to perform their best quality and try the new creation of bakpia.
That’s why recently bakpia has the various tastes as the creation product of its maker. Not only mung bean, chocolate, durian, and cheese, but also pineapple and cappuccino already become the alternative choices of bakpia tastes. The double filled bakpia stuffed with 2 kinds of fillings have also been made by certain producers, e.g. the products offered by Waroeng Ngangeni at Jl. Dagen No.7 Yogyakarta. Besides Bakpia from Pathok, the other bakpias can also be tasted. Bakpia Pojok at Jl Mojolali and bakpia product from Jl Tengiri Raya Minomartani are the examples.
Bakpia is nice to enjoy with a cup of warm tea, especially the fresh bakpia which is still warm. Enjoying it together while chatting with family or friends is a lovely moment.
